Before you answer that question, remember what the Declaration of Independence represented. The founders said that they were declaring their independence from a controlling and demanding government. They recognized that their rights and liberties came from God and not from government, therefore government had no authority over these rights and liberties such as the right to worship God in all places, the complete and total freedom of speech and thought, the right to redress government including questioning the outcome of an election, and the right to equal treatment under the law even to those who were not government supporters.
They understood that all, even the unborn had a right to life. They understood that it is government that is the threat to individual liberty and freedom and therefore there could be no infringement on the right of the public to bear arms. The founders declared that individual responsibility is critical for freedom and that government dependence is surrendering the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to the wishes of bureaucrats and technocrats, commonly called government. This is the last sentence of the Declaration of Independence, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. Many lost their fortunes. These lovers of individual liberty and freedom meant what they declared about pledging their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Yet we have people in the United States, people on the left, who mock and denigrate these people. We have people on the left who claim these men were only interested in oppressing others. Sadly, these same people of the left believe it is government that must control our lives, that it is government that must have toral control over our thoughts, our speech, and our choices. Based on their current actions, no one on the left would have supported the Declaration of Independence much less pledged their lives and fortunes. We know they would not have been able to pledge their sacred honor because you cannot pledge what you do not have.
