20 senators – all Marxist/Progressives - grilled Mylan about why it did not reduce the price of the EpiPen, an emergency allergy medication, and instead put forward more complicated discounting systems in response to the uproar about prices. Mylan, for example, expanded its program to provide discount cards to consumers. But the senators said that while consumers may be insulated from the price with such discounts, the insurer still has to pay a hefty cost, which in turn raises premiums.
“These changes will help some customers who are struggling to afford EpiPens,” the senators wrote in the letter released Tuesday. “Your discount programs, however, represent a well-defined industry tactic to keep costs high through a complex shell game.”
The lawmakers also questioned the company’s next plan to offer a generic version of the EpiPen for $300, about half of the price of the branded version.
“The price of the generic, for example, is still three times higher than the cost of the branded EpiPen in 2007,” the senators wrote. “And Mylan asserts that the generic is ‘identical to the branded product’ — further calling into question the price of branded EpiPens.”
As senators, it is none of their business what Mylan charges or how Mylan markets. The United States Constitution does not give the federal government any power over private companies. The companies are owned by private citizens and the company must answer only to its owners and the public in general. The owners have the power to dictate price and marketing tactics. The public has the power to dictate price and marketing tactics.
If the owners do not approve, they can replace management. If the public does not approve they do not have to purchase the product.
Those Marxist/Progressive senators are the very reason this company can market their product at the price they are asking. It is the regulatory constraints, demanded by the Marxist/Progressives, that have prevented other companies from entering the marketplace and allowing Mylan a literal monopoly.
In a free economy, value or price is determined by the age old economic formula of value being determined by supply and demand. The Marxist/Progressives have implemented only half of the socialist formula, that is government controls entry into a market. Now they are trying to implement the second half of the socialist formula, value or price is determined by the central planners.
Many Americans will cheer the effort by the Marxist/Progressive senators believing that the Marxist/Progressives are getting involved to protect the “people.” Marxist/Progressives have always used situations of this nature to push their agenda. Their agenda is the government dictating what is fair to all base on their prejudices and central planners having complete control over the economy, both supply and demand with the central planners determining value or price.
This agenda has been tried many times. It has always failed. It has failed because it does not work. The Marxist/Progressives would try to have you believe their agenda has failed because it was not done properly by their predecessors. That is the same lie the Collectivists, Marxists, Progressives, and Socialists have always used. It is as big a lie now as it was then. IT DOES NOT WORK.
