To a large extent, we the people are also relinquishing our right to know through a truly free press. We are doing this by not demanding the press be a responsible protector of our freedoms. The intended purpose of a free press is to protect our freedoms. It is the responsibility of the press to search and learn when those servants in government would impose their dictates on the people as opposed to our dictates being imposed on them.
However, we the people are not demanding our press be a responsible press and the chief protector of our freedom. In the United States today, our very freedom and security is being threatened on many fronts. Our basic freedoms of the 1st amendment are under constant attack with the Progressives demanding freedom of speech be limited and implementing government control by requiring journalists be licensed. Our governments are accumulating huge amounts of debt that is strangling our economy and threatening the existence of our military. We are being threatened by Islamic Terrorists within our borders and from outside our borders. Our Southern border is non-existent and threatens the very existence of our nation. Our entitlement programs add to the increasing debt daily and nobody discusses the inevitable crisis. Government agencies such as the IRS, EPA, BLM, and Department of Homeland Security ignore the protections guaranteed by the constitution by reversing who has the burden of proof. The United States is quickly becoming a government controlled economy with central planning as opposed to a free enterprise economy. There are many more.
What we the people have done is not demand the press report on any of these issues. Instead we clamor for sensational news. During the current presidential campaign we are captivated by a candidate who is rude and crude and receives accolades because he can insult good and honorable people as opposed to discussing the above issues. If we the people would turn of the news programs that have run these senseless soundbites evening after evening and instead sought out the real news, the press would quickly understand.
We the people are also more interested in the death of some pop star than in critical happenings. This last news cycle has been saturated and thus dominated by the death of some drug addicted musician. A short story of what happened is certainly understandable, but instead we accept and encourage 60 minute news broadcasts to devote the entire 60 minutes to this irrelevant event. In the meantime we learn very little about the disastrous meeting Obama had with the Saudi King. We learn very little about the uproar Obama is creating in the United Kingdom by telling the Brits they will be treated by the United States as a second class country if they decide to exit the European Union.
These very newsworthy events were completely ignored by the bulk of the press. We the people allowed it and many of us do not even care. The reality is that the death of the drug addicted musician will have no impact on anybody but his family and entourage. The disastrous foreign policy and Obama’s latest missteps will have repercussions for months and possibly years to come. Obama succeeded in further alienating two allies. He created a larger crevice in our already strained relationship with the Saudi’s and emboldened the Iranian government and the terrorist groups they support while intervening in a domestic argument in London.
An informed and educated public is critical to a free and independent society. Do not blame the press for their failure to inform and educate, blame we the people for not demanding it.
