Harnett, who is the first African American chairman of the North Carolina GOP, said that he started to change his views through a friend, who "inspired me to become the Republican I am today."
"He talked about the power of limited government as well as having strong family. After those kinds of conversations, I realized that I was part of the wrong party," he explained.
He believes that more African Americans can become Republicans through "education and having open conversations" about the issues.
"One of the things I've done successfully is take both platforms — the Democratic platform as well as the Republican platform — and white-out [the party names] and ask that individual to read these two platforms and make a decision as to which one best represents them," he explained. "Nine times out of 10, they choose Republicans."
Harnett says that in order to reach different groups of people, such as young voters, the Republican party needs to articulate "a message that resonates" with them.
This is really the difference between what America was intended to be and what it has become. The founders said limited government, divided government, and government where those in government were the servants was the only government that promoted freedom and individual independence.
I would go one step further and say those who promote big government promote enslaving the individual American whether he is black, brown, yellow or white. This enslavement has no color barriers. The black community has perhaps been more susceptible because so many of its leaders and promoters are charlatans.
We must not limit these big government promoters to just the Democrats (Marxist/Progressives). Within the Republican Party there are plenty of big government promoters with the mentality that the government is the solution as opposed to the problem. A few names that come to mind would be McCain, Boehner, McCarthy, and I am sure you can add to the list.
There are two very important lessons to be learned from this experience; discuss, do not argue or debate, and use examples that show the differences. The hard core Marxist/Progressive will probably not be swayed, but that person who calls himself one thing only because that is what he is supposed to be, but is willing to listen to a reasonable point of view, can and will very often see the light.
In the United States today, we no longer have Republican and Democrat as we have in the past. Today we have Marxist/Progressives and Freedom Loving Americans. Many people who say they side with Democrats have no idea they are siding with the Marxist/Progressives whose only intent is to enslave Americans. Marxism, which promotes big government, can only and has only enslaved those people who believed its lies.
