Of course the big government proponents led by the Marxist/Progressives have never let the constitution stop them from becoming involved and then assuming complete authority for other powers that were never to be in their purview. Just like everything else the federal government has been involved with, the costs in education have skyrocketed, all people are in a worse position, and a time bomb is ticking.
Outstanding student loan debt owed by existing borrowers continues to swell. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates that outstanding debt is approaching $1.2 trillion as of May 2013. It is also estimated that student loans guaranteed or held by the federal government will cross the $1 trillion mark.
Here are some facts about student debt: The average student in 2014 had a $33,000 loan; over 70% of all students have a loan; today over 40 million Americans are paying off student debt; since the federal government became involved in student debt tuition has increased by 275%; the Congressional Budget Office projects that the Federal Government made about $50 BILLION on student loans in 2013; over 7 million loans are in default affecting the credit, the job, or the chance of getting a job for these people.
The Marxists have always believed that people should receive based on perceived need and not production, that the wealthy or oppressors should pay more so the oppressed can receive, and that all educations should be free to the oppressed. This is clearly what is taking place. We have learned time after time that nothing is free. The bubbles that are created with this type of Pollyanna thinking have always led to disaster. Ask Greece, Spain, Venezuela, Portugal, and soon the United States. Unfortunately bubbles burst and despair follows.
