The colonists had some very unique ideas on how a country was to be governed. In the Declaration of Independence they stated that certain rights are given to citizens by the Creator and not by man. The European countries believed that all rights of citizens are given by man or government and thus can be taken back by man or government.
The European countries believed that government was sovereign and the people were to serve the government. The founders said that in America the sovereign will be the people and the government will serve at the will of the people. The European rulers laughed at this idea explaining that people are not capable of ruling themselves. This is the Great American Experience.
Were the European rulers correct? It would seem that perhaps they were.
If a people is to rule itself it must be educated and informed.
In America today, many citizens who vote do not know the difference between the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers. Many Americans not only do not know the difference, they do not know these critical documents exist or their purpose.
In America today, many citizens do not understand the difference between a Republic and a Democracy and consequently do not know that America is a Republic.
In America today, almost all citizens do not know that Political Parties are private organizations and are not part of the government nor provided for and consequently regulated by the Constitution. The Constitution makes no mention of how an individual is to be a candidate for President. Political Parties can use any method they choose to select their nominee.
In America today, almost all citizens have no understanding that Socialism and Communism are not the same. Socialism is an economic system and Communism is a political system.
In America today, most Americans, including elected members of congress, are illiterate about the principles on which our nation was founded and how it is to operate.
If a people is to rule itself, that body must be self-reliant and responsible.
Thomas Jefferson warned future generations that a free nation cannot continue to exist if the private property including money is taken from people who would work and redistributed to those who would not work.
When citizens understand that they can vote for representatives who will then give them “free stuff,” those citizens just began to voluntarily surrender their freedom.
If a people is to rule itself, people with character, virtue, and veracity must be elected as the servants who will govern.
When members of the government are not punished for lying and misleading the members of congress but in many cases praised and promoted for their dishonesty, the people are now the servants and the government has become sovereign.
When those who would seek elected office knowingly lie and mislead and are still elected to office, then the government is sovereign and the people are the servants.
When those who would seek office have violated civil and criminal laws, and are still elected to office than the government is sovereign and the people are the servants.
When those who would seek office exhibit disdain for the citizens and personal immaturity and are still elected to office than the government is sovereign and the people are the servants.
The rulers of Europe would be telling our founders today that they were correct when they said people are incapable of being the sovereign. The people do not have the discipline, the desire, or the discernment to be sovereign. The people will not take the time to educate themselves about how self-government works or the time to dig below the slogans and lies of devious and self-serving individuals who seek office for personal gain and fulfillment as opposed to serving the people.
It will take a Sam Adams type effort by Freedom Loving Americans if the Great American Experiment is to continue as envisioned by those wise and brave founders. Sam Adams told us that it does not take a majority to prevail, but a tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men. We must start today.
