Notice in the definition of debate the descriptive words of respectful and well reasoned are use.
We have had a series of so called Republican debates. Only one of these gatherings could have been called a debate, meaning it was respectful and the arguments were well reasoned. In all the other gatherings, both respect and well reasoned arguments were missing. Instead, of discussion, we heard one person constantly interrupting and shouting over the other participants. Arguments, as opposed to being well reasoned, were personal insults reminiscent of what would be expected on a fifth grade school yard or in a barroom after midnight.
The American people are truly the losers, if we are interested in nominating and then electing a statesman to lead our nation which is suffering greatly due to our choice of selecting a community organizer who has as his goal to diminish the country he despises. The last statesman that occupied the Oval Office was Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a man of character with strong and firm beliefs on how the United States would have to recover from the debacle of the Jimmy Carter years.
When Ronald Reagan participated in the debates, he was always respectful and put forth well reasoned arguments. The American people responded to that respect Reagan gave his opponents, to Reagan never reverting to personal insults, and to the statesman that was Reagan. Reagan also had a firm and strong understanding of what he believed. He did not and would not change these beliefs in order to win a vote. The American people listened and was the better for it.
Reagan also told us that a nations leaders are a reflection of the nation. In the current "debates" we have been told that the individual who has shouted the loudest and insulted the most has been the winner of that debate. We have seen this sentiment reflected in both the Democrat and the Republican debates. According to Reagan we have become a nation more reflective of "reality television" and "Ultimate fights" than of respectful and reasoned thought. The Republican debate that was respectful and had very reasoned thought was also called by many as very dull and boring.
The American people will again be the losers if we do not demand from these candidates that they be truthful and give us detail of their ideas and plans. We must turn from slogans and listen to the detail. We must insist, in these debates, that issues and not meaningless trivia be discussed. We can do this by our reactions to these debates. Yes, the respectful and well reasoned debate will be boring, unlike a reality show or ultimate fight, but we the American people will be the winners.
If we had insisted on understanding what "hope and change" really meant, we would not be on our road to becoming a Marxist totalitarian state today. If we insist that our next president be a statesman of the highest order, and not the best shouter and insulter, perhaps we will have a recovery from the Obama years like we had from the Carter years. It really is our choice. We Freedom Loving Americans must be the leaders in this effort.
