It was in Jamestown that the concept of individual ownership of productive property by those other than the state or nobility began. This concept led to capitalism, which led to the most innovative and productive society, also the most generous and compassionate, ever seen before or since. It is capitalism that is being attacked today as evil and restrictive. It is the ambitious who are ridiculed and punished. So today we are becoming a society where the bottom drags down the top and weakens us all, as opposed to the top pulling up the bottom that strengthens all. We see this in examples such as record numbers of people on food stamps, on disability, no longer looking for work and most frightening is anemic job growth numbers being heralded even as the overwhelming number of this truly paltry number is part time and not full time work.
The second aspect started in Jamestown that made us great and unique was the birth of representative government. Within a few years of Jamestown being founded, we find that representatives being duly selected by fellow colonists met in a general assembly. Through the years the concept of limited government being the best government and government honoring the rule of law emerged from the spirit of that first general assembly. Today, we are told big and intrusive government is best. We are told rule of law is a concept that does not work and is not fair. A massive bill that was called a health care bill was passed before it was read and clearly before it was understood. This bill alone is creating and even more massive and intrusive government and has eroded even further the concept of rule of law. We are seeing the executive branch arbitrarily rewriting the law for its own political purposes.
The two principles most responsible for the uniqueness and greatness of the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave are being shredded by the Marxist/Progressives who despise both capitalism and rule of law as found in the US Constitution.
