I was an avid Green Bay Packer fan from 1957 on. I remember when the Packers hired a coach by the name of Vince Lombardi. I remember when Lombardi told his third string quarterback by the name of Bart Star that he was going to be the starter. He also told a flamboyant quarterback by the name of Paul Hornung that he would be the starting halfback. Most importantly, Lombardi told his players that discipline, fundamentals, and character were paramount in his football program. The rest is history. The Packers became the most feared and respected team in the NFL.
The Packers were not a great team just because they won football games. They were a great football team because they respected their coach, they respected each other, and they respected their country and fellow citizens. When the Packers scored a touchdown, they did not dance around like spoiled children, but understood that was their job and casually dropped the football in the end zone and went back to the bench to get ready for the next offensive series. If they had not acted professional, they would not have played the next series.
When Ray Nitschke or Willie Davis made a spectacular defensive play, they did not chest bump anybody they could find or dance around bringing glory to themselves. Spectacular defensive plays were part of doing the job. Spectacular defensive plays are what Lombardi expected and demanded. This was just a part of being a professional playing on a championship team. Lombardi required you act like a champion, both off the field, before the game when the National Anthem was being played, and during the game.
Vince Lombardi also demanded his players be good citizens. There were no thugs, no child beaters, no wife beaters, no assaulters, no robbers, and no murderers playing on a Vince Lombardi team. Lombardi understood that a true champion on the field, must first and foremost be an individual of good repute, good character, and a good citizen. He demanded this behavior and his players responded accordingly. I remember having the opportunity to speak with Willie Davis and with Jerry Kramer. Both individuals were wonderful people and great football players. Both expressed nothing but respect, admiration, and yes even love for Lombardi. Both continued to live as exemplary citizens.
The NFL changed. Thugs, child beaters, wife beaters, assaulters, robbers, and even murderers were welcomed on teams, if they had outstanding athletic ability. These were players Lombardi would have sent packing before they even found their locker. The character of the players, coaches, and NFL personal has deteriorated. Professional athletes, who are paid huge sums of money, act like they had done something spectacular, when they are just doing their job. These players will spend time practicing their celebration dances that will bring them personal attention. These are players Lombardi would have sent to the locker room and told them to clean out their locker because they do not have the character of a champion. The NFL has changed. Many of us stopped watching these thugs, child beaters, wife beaters, assaulters, robbers and even murderers some time ago.
Now the NFL is telling us, not only will they tolerate deplorable individuals on their teams, but they will tolerate, no, they will encourage, these thugs, child beaters, wife beaters, assaulters, robbers and even murderers to disrespect the fans, our flag, our armed forces, our National Anthem, and our nation. I cannot boycott the NFL because of this. I had already stopped watching the NFL because of their support of thugs, child beaters, wife beaters, assaulters, robbers, and even murderers. If I had not stopped watching the NFL, I would begin my boycott immediately.
If you are a Freedom Loving American who believes in liberty and independence, and had continued to watch and support the NFL, you were declaring your support and approval of thugs, child beaters, wife beaters, assaulters, robbers, and murderers. If you continue to watch and support the NFL, you are condoning and thus supporting an entity that is openly advocating the abolition of the liberty and independence you claim to cherish. The NFL has stated they no longer respect the fans, the flag, the armed forces, the Nation Anthem and the nation. Your decision to boycott or not boycott is much bigger than you just deciding how you will spend your Sunday afternoons. The real decision you are making is whether or not you support the fundamental transformation of the United States Barack Obama promised, or if you support the United States remaining a free and independent nation.
