Currently only 58.9% of the total potential workforce is employed. This number is decreasing rather than increasing despite the claim that the economy has been growing. The claim that this is due to retirement of baby boomers as the reason is not supported by facts. Civilian employment rate of people between 25 and 54 is at its lowest number since the early 1980’s. That number is 81.2% and has declined each of the last five years.
The method that has been used by the Labor Department is the most restrictive method. If a more normal method were used we have unemployment measured in the double digits. Labor growth has not kept pace with population growth much less grown at a rate sufficient to absorb the unemployed.
Another reason that the traditional unemployment rate is less informative about the overall health of the labor market is the fact that today the number of long-term unemployed is at its highest level on record dating back to 1948. There are approximately twice as many Americans—now 3.7 million—who have been unemployed for half a year or longer and are still actively searching for work. Thirty-six percent of all unemployed fall into this long-term unemployed category. The average length of time someone has spent unemployed is now more than eight months, roughly double what is was before the recession.
As for job growth, during the economic expansion of the 1990s, the economy added at least 250,000 per month 48 times. During the current expansion, which has now lasted roughly half as long, we have seen only 6 months of job growth greater than 250,000 with many of these jobs being part time.
Despite the dire real status of the labor picture, Obama, head of the regime and Marxist/Progressives, continues to stonewall the Keystone Pipeline which would employee thousands of workers directly plus be responsible for so many peripheral jobs. The Marxist/Progressives continue to demand a huge increase in the minimum wage which always depresses the unemployment picture. The Marxist/Progressives continue to insist on implementing Obamacare which is a proven job killer.
The policies of the Marxist/Progressives are the reason for the dire employment picture and yet they refuse to adjust these job denying and job killing policies. They claim to be the friend of the working class American and yet they are doing everything they can to keep these people unemployed and on the government dole. This would lead any rational person to conclude the Marxist/Progressives measure success by how many new people they can add to the government dole list. In this, they are very successful.
