Marxism is now the only acceptable thought on most campuses. The principles upon which our nation was founded; rule of law, limited government, divided government, and rule by the people are not taught and are not even allowed to be discussed on campuses today. Many years ago, nonconforming thoughts were encouraged. Today on our campuses, just like in all Communist communities, only the prevailing ideas and thoughts espoused by Marxists is acceptable.
A report from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has revealed that over 230 American universities are encouraging students to report their peers for offensive speech. Offensive speech is considered to be speech that offends another. The First Amendment does not prohibit insults or speech that might be offensive. Offensive speech has the same protection as does speech that is considered complimentary.
In Great Britain, The University of Sussex has been slammed for suppressing right-wing points of view after hosting a seminar teaching students how to “deal with right-wing attitudes in the classroom”. Whether it be in Great Britain or the United States, the exchange of all ideas should be encouraged. Those societies that censor and control speech are those communities that are venturing closer and closer to a totalitarian state. A totalitarian state is always a state of censorship and thus insists on conformity of speech and thought.
A hallmark of a free society is the strict adherence to and protection of all speech and thought. The speech and thought of all must be protected, even the speech and thought of the extremes. In free societies, freedom of speech and thought has always been a part of the university experience. This is no longer true in the United States and apparently in Great Britain as well.
