“Alarmed that fewer than one-fourth of voters are showing up for municipal elections, the Los Angeles Ethics Commission voted Thursday to recommend that the City Council look at using cash prizes to lure a greater number of people to the polls.
On a 3-0 vote, the panel said it wanted City Council President Herb Wesson’s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee to seriously consider the use of financial incentives and a random drawing during its elections, possibly as soon as next year.”
Thomas Jefferson said, “Freedom is lost gradually, by an uninterested, and uninformed, and an uninvolved people.”
“I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe. … Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government—from their carelessness and negligence—I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct.—that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant—give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy.”
— Daniel Webster (1782-1852) Author, Lawyer and Patriot
What has brought us to the place that we would have to bribe people to vote, the most important responsibility we have as a citizen of a free country. We have arrived at this place primarily because of our education system. This is the result of educators and politicians changing the education system to an indoctrination system where it is deemed to be more important that we teach multicultural courses, sex-education courses, gender identification courses or what the Marxist/Progressives and ultra-left would call politically correct courses.
These courses have become a part of the education curriculum at the expense of accurate and real American history courses which build in the student an identity with our national heritage. We no longer have constitutional classes and civic classes which the Marxist/Progressives will not allow to be taught because it is the opposite of their principles and philosophy. We no longer encourage open and honest debate about such topics as rule of law vs arbitrary law, self-reliance vs government reliance, self-choice vs government dictates, and individualism vs collectivism. It is critical to have an educational system in a free and open society. It is critical to have an indoctrination system in a totalitarian and conforming society.
The solution proposed to the Los Angeles City Council is a solution that reflects the intellectual insufficiency of our elected officials. Is a non-voter better or worse than an uninformed voter which I believe it is safe to say these enticed voters would be? Perhaps the Los Angeles City Council should concentrate on ways to interest, inform and involve people as opposed to bribing people. Maybe they could hold civic classes and teach all the things that have not been taught in the schools and reward people for learning about the unique system of government we have in America. Maybe these people would then understand why it is so critical we protect that system by electing people of character and intellect to all offices. Perhaps this would not be in the best personal interest of many of the currently elected officials. It would certainly not be in the best interest of any of the Marxist/Progressives in office today.
