We were, according to the Declaration of Independence granted certain rights by the creator that are unalienable rights and among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. It is important to note that these unalienable rights are not restricted to these three, but these three, but that these are included in the total. Unalienable rights are rights not from the government but from the creator, so these rights cannot be taken or restricted by the government. Included in the total of the unalienable rights would be many of the rights reserved for the people in the Bill of Rights. These are rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to bear arms, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and so forth. They are not for the government to restrict or tamper with in any manner. These rights are essential in a free society. In every totalitarian state, it is these rights that are restricted and limited.
Our founders told us, when any government becomes destructive of these rights, we are to alter or abolish that government and form a new one. This is a very serious charge we were given. As we look at the happenings and events in recent history, have we reached such a point? Doing a quick exam, I would suggest we are coming closer and closer to that time. At the very least we must have an open and honest discussion that transcends spin and political correctness.
A quick examination shows us freedom of religion has been trampled. People are told they must go against very basic religious belief of the right to life. These people are told they must adhere to the dictates and financially support the termination of life of an unborn human being through a concept called medical insurance. Freedom to bear arms is being restricted more and more every day. Freedom of the press is being threatened by a bill in the Senate that would require a definition as to who is the press with restrictions on any reporter who does not meet such definition. Freedom of speech is being threatened by the IRS with the assistance of members of congress including but not limited to Schumer and Cummings. This is a small number of such restrictions on unalienable rights.
Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint and the power of self-determination attributed to the will.
At the very least we are certainly a less free society then we were at the time we won our independence and we are becoming less free every day. Continuing down this same path will lead us to that inevitable time when we must do as we were instructed to do; alter or abolish this government and institute a new one or become a totalitarian state with all that implies. Karl Marx explained it will take despotic means with the establishment of a totalitarian state to complete the fundamental transformation he outlined and Obama promised. Will we allow it to happen? A conscious choice will have to be made.
