The real tragedy is this transformation is occurring and the overwhelming American Public is incapable of understanding this concept or is simply not interested. The result of this transformation has always ended in totalitarianism and many times tyranny. In every situation the citizens not only lost freedom, but their living standards and opportunities were greatly reduced.
Collectivism is defined as the theory and practice that makes some sort of group rather than the individual the fundamental unit of political, social, and economic concern. In theory,collectivists insist that the claims of groups, associations, or the state must normally supersede the claims of individuals.
Individualism is at once an ethical-psychological concept and an ethical-political one. As an ethical-psychological concept, individualism holds that a human being should think and judge independently, respecting the sovereignty of his or her mind; thus, it is intimately connected with the concept of autonomy.
The net effect of the collective society is the reduction of the individual striving for excellence and independence. The realty of collectivism is the average of society is always reduced because society limits the excellent and caters to the mediocre. The effect of individualism is to always raise the average, because those who wish to strive for excellence are encouraged. Standards are raised and all strive for higher standards. The antitheses of this concept is best exemplified by the American Public School System and American society
