Napolitano said in her released statement, "We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity … We take seriously our responsibility to protect the civil rights and liberties of the American people, including subjecting our activities to rigorous oversight from numerous internal and external sources."
Authored by DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis (OIA), the report, Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment, was part of a series of publications to "facilitate a greater understanding of the phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United States." Despite the report's acknowledgment that there is a lack of evidence for a specific terrorist threat from these groups, it does say that "rightwing extremists" could use "several emergent issues," such as the election of President Obama, rumors of potential gun control legislation and the economic downturn as recruiting tools.
Forward to today.
The United States is reviving a law enforcement group to investigate those it designates as domestic terrorists, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.
The Department of Justice will reconstitute a task force that was originally formed after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing but dissolved after the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks as law enforcement agencies focused on threats from militants abroad.
On Tuesday, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement that the United States remains concerned about threats from Islamic extremists, but the group will focus on other motives for attacks within U.S. borders.
Could the focus be on those “right wing extremists” who oppose high taxes, who oppose big government, who talk in a concerned manner about the economy and unemployment, who oppose abortion and gay marriage and gun control, and who are not impressed with Obama. Are we “right wing extremists” considered a bigger threat by Obama, head of the regime and Marxist/Progressives, than even a jihadist?
